March 15, 2004

Agenda

  1. Rise of the Roman Republic Notes and PowerPoint
  2. Roman Republic Timeline. Create a vertical timeline of key events leading to the Roman Republic entitled, “Key Events in the Roman Republic”. As you read through the handout, “The Struggle for Political Power in Ancient Rome”, highlight the five major events that lead to a more democratic republic. The dates for the 5 events occur between 509 BCE and 287 BCE. Plot those events on your vertical timeline. On one side of the timeline, you should have the date and a one sentence summary of the event. On the other side of the timeline, you should draw a visual (IN COLOR) that represents the key event. I only have hard copies of this handout so please stop by my room to get a copy if you need one.
  3. Influence of Latin on Modern English. Many of the words we see today can be traced back to Latin origins. Using the Latin term and definition, find the English equivalent among a group of photographed signs that contain words derived from Latin roots.

Homework

  1. Answer the following questions as a wrap-up to the Latin words activity we did in class today:
    • What did you learn about Latin in this activity that you did not know before?
    • Why do you think many students continue to study Latin in school, even though it is considered a “dead language”?
    • Do you think other languages may have been influenced by Latin? Why or why not?
    • Can you think of any other words, in English or another language, that have been influenced by Latin?
