  2. Roman Contributions Project - DUE MON 3/22. This assignment is worth 30 pts and counts as a project grade!
    Directions: Western civilization has been influenced by the many cultural and technological achievements of Ancient Rome. You will research eight key areas in which Rome has impacted Western civilization. For each item listed under a key area, you will write a 2-4 sentence description (what is it, why is it significant, what is its relevance today). You will need to include graphics, IN COLOR, for each category. Specific requirements are listed below. You are encouraged to use your text (pp. 166-170 unless otherwise listed), the Internet, and other outside sources for information. Your project may be hand-drawn or computer-generated, so long as it meets all of the requirements. In addition to quality of content, I will be grading on appearance and creativity.

  2. Create a vertical timeline entitled, Key Events in the Roman Republic.
    DIRECTIONS: As you read through the handout, “The Struggle for Political Power in Ancient Rome”, highlight the five major events that lead to a more democratic republic. The dates of the 5 events occur between 509 BCE and 287 BCE. Plot those events on your vertical timeline. On one side of the timeline, write the date along with a one sentence summary of the event. On the other side of the timeline, draw a visual (IN COLOR) that represents the key event. I only have hard copies of this handout so stop by my room if you need a copy.
  3. In class activity: Exploring the Influence of Latin on Modern English. Many of the words we see today can be traced back to Latin origins. Using the Latin term and definition, find the English equivalent among various landscapes in photographed signs that contain words derived from Latin roots.

    Shade where the earliest peoples where located. Include a map key.
    - Copy & answer the following questions:
    1) What types of geographic features are around Italy? Name 5 from the map.
    2) What are some advantages of settling there?
    3) Where is Greece in relation to Italy (N, S, E, W)?
    4) Why were the Latins ideally positioned to gain control of the entire Italian Peninsula?

  1. For your Ancient Rome Title Page, please copy the timeline on p. 152. Five major events are listed on the timeline. You are to add a picture related to each event. Use at least five colors in your title page. You should FIRST read about each event so you can formulate what type of picture each one calls for. I have listed page numbers for your convenience. Remember to title your timeline, “Ancient Rome” at the top of the page.
    - Roman Republic (pp. 156-157)
    - Punic Wars (pp. 160-161)
    - Jesus dies (p. 172)
    - Pax Romana ends (p. 167, 175)
    - Constantine (p. 176-177)
  2. Create a two frame political cartoon (in color) about the start of the Roman republic. One frame should address the initial conflict between the plebians & patricians and the other frame should show one of the plebian victories. Make sure you title the cartoon. Use pp. 156-157 of your text for background.
